Mary Jo Sloan Perkins
CARTHAGE — Mary Jo Sloan Perkins, 69, died Thursday, Sept. 26, at FirstHealth Hospice in Pinehurst.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28 at Yates Thagard Baptist Church with the Revs. Steve Johnson and Sammy Frye officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at Yates Thagard Baptist Church.
Born in Columbia, South Carolina, Mrs. Perkins lived with her family in many states and overseas. She was the daughter of the late Samuel Joseph Sloan and Mary Louise Spirers Sloan. Mrs. Perkins was a dedicated nursing instructor at Sandhills Community College for 32 years and touched many lives. She worked as a nurse in the newborn nursery at Moore Regional Hospital and worked as a nurse manager in the newborn nursery in Huntsville, Alabama. There she helped facilitate the use of NASA’s latest technological innovations. She was a member of Yates Thagard Baptist Church and a devout Christian.
Survivors include her husband of 47 years, Bill Perkins; a daughter, Rita Oldham and husband, Alan of Pinehurst; two sons, Todd Perkins and wife, Susan of Sellersville, Pennsylvania, and Brian Perkins and wife, Brandi of Clewiston, Florida; one sister, Dr. Sarah Sloan Kreutziger and husband, Dr. Keith of New Orleans, Louisiana; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved shih tzu, Lady. The family requests that any nurses present wear nursing pins or crosses.
