McClure’s 18 helps L-R beat Newberry

Bears’ senior point guard 29 points shy of milestone

HICKORY — Lenoir-Rhyne senior guard R.J. McClure, a former Pisgah High standout, finished with a team-high 18 points in a 83-79 victory over Newberry Monday night in a South Atlantic Conference game at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
The Bears improved to 12-10 overall and 11-7 in the SAC, while Newberry sunk to 15-7 and 11-7.
McClure, who also raised his career total points scored to 971, pumped in 13 after halftime as the Bears improved to 9-1 on their home court.
With 19 seconds left in the game, Newberry cut the lead to a point, 80-79, on a trey by Dondray Walker, but McClure iced the win for the Bears with three free throws.   
In addition, McClure hit four treys and Lenoir-Rhyne exacted revenge on Newberry, which defeated the Bears by a 134-127 score in triple overtime on Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Newberry.
Lenoir-Rhyne next faces long-time rival Catawba in a South Atlantic Conference game on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Salisbury.
With 29 points to go, McClure could reach the 1,000 point milestone against younger brother Rory McClure on Saturday, Feb. 22, on the road (4 p.m. tipoff) at Tusculum College.
