Tuscola High’s Caleb McConnell announced on Wednesday this summer’s Mountaineer Youth Baseball Camp will be held on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 7-8, at Tuscola Ballpark next to Junaluska Elementary.
Last summer, McConnell’s camp drew 77 boys from five counties and the Eastern Cherokee reservation.
Both sessions of the camp, which is for boys ages 7 and up, begins a 10 a.m. and concludes at 2 p.m. with no break for lunch. The cost of the camp is $100.
In addition to McConnell, other camp instructors include Eryk McConnell, Mitchell Whitner, Michael Munoz and current UNC Asheville infielder Justin Woods.
(Caleb) McConnell, who is the head baseball coach at Tuscola High and manages the Haywood Post 47 Dragoons senior legion team, pitched for Tuscola, Western Carolina University and two season professionally, while (Eryk) McConnell, who is a varsity assistant at Tuscola High and the manager of the Haywood Post 47 Doughboys junior legion team, pitched for Tuscola, North Carolina State University, two years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization and one year in an independent league.
Whitner, who is the Tuscola junior varsity manager and Post 47’s roveing instructor, was a standout pitcher and catcher at Tuscola, played two seasons at Wilkes Community College and coached several years on the junior college level. Munoz, who is an assistant coach for the Doughboys, was a standout third baseman for Tuscola and played for the Western Carolina University Catamounts. Woods had a stellar career at Tuscola and was an infielder for McConnell. He will be a junior infielder at UNC-Asheville.
Each session offers all players quality instruction from the camp’s instructors. Campers will be placed into age appropriate groups and will work on all facets of the game including hitting, fielding, base-running, and pitching. Detailed instruction will be provided in all aspects of the game; followed by drill stations where campers will have the chance to work on the techniques covered by the instructors. This camp is designed for campers to learn and improve their skills, but to enjoy and have fun playing the game of baseball.
