Leslie D. McDowell, a nurse practitioner from Waynesville, graduated from the University of Alabama with a Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree Dec. 15. A nurse practitioner since 1994, who has practiced in Haywood County since 1997, McDowell earned the degree with an overall GPA of 4.0.

Her research project focused on referral and completion rates for cardiac rehabilitation in a rural community setting, and will be presented at the annual meeting of the Preventive Cardiovascular Nurses Association in May. The DNP degree will be the standard for all nurse practitioner education in coming years.

“While I would have been grandfathered in and did not have to obtain this degree in order to continue to practice, it seemed an appropriate next step in my career path, McDowell said. “I consider myself a lifelong learner and gained valuable knowledge from the program.”

She works in the information systems department at Medwest with quality reporting and helping providers and other clinicians implement the electronic health record.

“There are many quality initiatives coming our way as the health care system in the US undergoes a variety of changes, and I’m excited to play a role in assisting providers to fully participate in them,” she said.
