CLYDE, N.C. – Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists, an established orthopedic practice in Clyde, is joining the MedWest Physician Network.

Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists includes Paul Cutting, M.D., Gerald King, M.D., and Kelly Monfort, PA-C, and offers comprehensive orthopedic and sports medicine care to Haywood County and the surrounding community.

Dr. Cutting specializes in general orthopedics as well as hand and upper extremity care. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He attended medical school at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland and completed his residency at the Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Ft. Gordon, Georgia. He also completed a fellowship with Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC and Raymond A. Curtis National Hand Center in Union Memorial Hospital, Baltimore, Maryland.

According to the American College of Hand Surgeons, hand fellowship trained Orthopaedic Surgeons are trained to handle complex fractures of the hand and injuries to the small carpal bones of the wrist.

Dr. Gerald King specializes in general orthopedics and joint replacement. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is the Medical Director of the Joint Replacement program at MedWest Haywood. He attended medical school at Loma Linda University School of Medicine in Loma Linda, CA where he also completed his residency.

One of Dr King’s specialties is the anterior approach to hip replacement. According to a New York Times article, this type of surgery allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip instead of the side or the back approach. This makes for a much less invasive surgery than traditional hip replacement surgery and allows for a much more rapid rehabilitation and recovery time.

Both physicians are actively involved with the MedWest Haywood Sports Medicine program, which provides free support to middle and high school athletes in Haywood County.

Kelly Monfort, PA-C, received her degree from the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury, NY.

The addition of Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists brings the total number of practices in the MedWest Physician Network to 19, employing close to 100 providers in Haywood, Jackson, Swain and Macon counties.

“MedWest Physician Network is thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists in maintaining and improving access to care for the communities served by our organization.
