MedWest Sports Medicine is offering Haywood County student athletes free pre-participation sports physicals Thursday, May 30 at the MedWest Health & Fitness Center on the campus of MedWest-Haywood.
More than 50 volunteers and 15 physicians and health care specialists will be on hand to conduct the physicals for Haywood County middle and high public school students for the 2013-14 school year. A team of physicians and physician assistants in the fields of primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, general surgery, ENT (or ear, nose and throat), women’s care, urology and orthopedic surgery are joining MedWest Sports Medicine for this special evening focused on the health of local student athletes.
The sports physicals will be held May 30 at the MedWest Health & Fitness Center on the campus of MedWest-Haywood at the following times:
•5:45 p.m. for Canton Middle School and Bethel Middle School students,
•6:30 p.m. for Pisgah High School students,
•7:15 p.m. for Waynesville Middle School and Haywood Christian Academy, and
•8 p.m. for Tuscola High School students.
New this year, MedWest-Haywood will offer free health screenings for parents and families of student athletes during the sports physicals, including blood pressure checks, swallowing, voice, and speech language screenings, body mass index calculations, and more.
Educational tables for numerous services including cardiac rehab, osteoporosis, pelvic floor/continence rehab, lymphedema, balance, and neurological rehab, and cancer care services will also be on display. Health care professionals will be available to answer questions and provide education on the services.
“Our community physicians, athletic trainers and physical therapists take great pride in caring for our student athletes as we enter the next sports season,” states Doug Scarborough, Sports Medicine Coordinator. “We are happy to also provide free health screenings for the families of these student athletes this year.”
Health information packets will be available in the front offices of each school two weeks prior to physicals. These packets need to be filled out by parents prior to the physicals. Parental attendance during the physicals also is requested in case there are health-related questions or findings by MedWest’s team of physicians and health care specialists.
There is no make-up date, but students who miss the May 30 session can receive physicals for fees that may vary with their family physicians or at one of MedWest's Urgent Care Centers at another time.
