Jack Mehaffey, a public works employee for the town of Maggie Valley, was awarded with the annual June Johnson Beautification Award during a Thursday board meeting.

The award was first given to Johnson in 2011 for her continuous efforts to make Maggie Valley a more beautiful place to live and work. She said she had the honor this year to present the award to Mehaffey who always goes above and beyond the call of duty.

"It is very well deserved and a testament to his personal character and work ethic," she said.

Johnson said she wouldn't have been able to complete any of her projects in town without the help of Mehaffey. He has helped her paint the welcome signs for Maggie Valley and has even been spotted feeding the koi in the festival grounds fountain at night.

Public Works Director Mike Mehaffey said Jack Mehaffey was one of the most caring and meticulous employees he's ever worked with and appreciated his hard work and dedication to the valley.

"He not only puts all his skill into his job but he puts his heart into the valley," Mike Mehaffey said.
