Mountain Credit Union honored for 50 years of service

Mountain Credit Union was chartered in April 1963, making 2013 a milestone for the local credit union as it celebrates 50 years of serving members and the Western North Carolina community.  In honor of this special event, the board of directors of Mountain Credit Union were presented a plaque from the North Carolina Credit Union Division at the monthly meeting held April 17.

Mountain Credit Union was established in 1963 with one office located in Asheville, North Carolina and serving federal employees in the 20 western counties of North Carolina. Since that time it has grown to seven offices with a community charter allowing them to serve residents of ten counties of WNC.

“I have been a member of Mountain Credit Union since 1979,”   “It has been a great experience to watch the credit union grown into a larger organization, while maintaining the credit union philosophy of people helping people,” said ," said Bob Cathey, chairman of the board.

Patty Idol has been with Mountain Credit Union since 1985 and has been president/CEO since 1999. Idol reminisced about the changes that have occurred since she started with the credit union 28 years ago.

“Technology has changed how we communicate and do business; however, one thing that remains the same is the need for professional and personal service to our members," Idol said.  "Our primary goal is always giving our members an excellent experience and making every effort to meet their needs and help them build and maintain financial security.  As a cooperative our members are our owners and we always make them our number one priority.”

Rose H. Conner, acting administrator for the North Carolina Credit Union Division attended the monthly Board of Director’s meeting to present the plaque honoring 50 years of outstanding service to Mountain Credit Union members and the community.
