Mountaineers’ focus only on winless East Eagles
The Tuscola varsity football team (7-2, 4-1 WNCAC) has already had its one off week, but tonight is as close to another Friday night off as the Mountaineers will get when they travel to play winless East Henderson (0-9, 0-5 WNCAC).
Tuscola’s wide-split veer option ground-and-pound offensive attack has been nearly unstoppable this season, averaging more than 35 points a game, while its defense has allowed 17.4 points per game.
Meanwhile, the Eagles are giving up 38.8 points per game and scoring an average of 13.1 points every Friday night. To make matters worse, East Henderson’s defense has allowed 42 or more points six of the eight games.
All signs point to another blowout win for the Mountaineers, who host WNCAC leading Franklin next Friday in a regular season finale. But the reason you play the game is because you never know what could happen and Tuscola Head Coach Brandon Allen assured the fan base his team is totally focused on East Henderson and will take care of business tonight no matter the record of the Eagles.
“East is extremely big up front and we know going in that we have to go over there and play good solid fundamental football,” said Allen on his coaches show on AM 1400. “If we don’t play sound football, we will be in for a fight. We know we still have Franklin on our schedule but our young men have been very good at taking the one game at a time approach, and they know for the Franklin game to mean anything we have to take care of business (tonight) at East.”
Last week, the Mountaineers rolled winless West Henderson on the road, 49-13, East Henderson lost its home game to Franklin, 42-7.
Leading Tuscola’s ground-and-pound is junior running back Bryce Myers, who has 1,219 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. He is also just 95 yards shy from reaching the 2,000-yard mark for a career. Senior quarterback Woody Cornwell, who has passed for 966 yards with eight touchdowns this season, is 34 yards away from reaching the 1,000 mark.
The leaders of the Tuscola defensive unit are junior linebacker Houston McCracken, who has amassed 45.5 total tackles (36 solo, 18 assist) and Jon Martinez, who has 54 total tackles, seven tackles for loss and a pair of sacks.
In last week’s game with Franklin, East Henderson took a 7-0 lead, then proceeded to give up 42 unanswered points. Allen’s boys take care of business, get another big WNCAC win against the Eagles and can beginning preparing for the showdown with Franklin on the bus ride home.
