Balsam — Loving mother, grandmother
BALSAM — Mrs. Clara Derrick Mehaffey, 81, of Balsam entered her Heavenly Home on Dec. 21, 2013, with her family by her side.
She was born in Haywood County to the late Arthur Newman and Nina McCall Derrick. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband “Bud” Mehaffey; brothers Pat, Walter, Charlie; and sisters Ruby Revis and Iris Peebles.
Mrs. Mehaffey moved to Charlotte after high school where she worked for the Southern Bell Telephone Company and then moved to Virginia where she worked at the Maida Factory.
Mrs. Mehaffey eventually made her way back to the mountains of North Carolina that she loved so much. She worked for several years at Sylco in Sylva. Clara enjoyed metal detecting, flea marketing and writing songs but her greatest love was for her family and God.
She was a loving mom who enjoyed being with friends and family and was always mindful of the needs of others. Survivors include her son Gary Mehaffey and Robin of Waynesville; daughter Donna and Judd Trull of Balsam; grandsons Alan and Laura Williams of Balsam, Mark Mehaffey of Balsam; two granddaughters Michelle and Travis Young of Waynesville, Kelly Mehaffey of Hampton, Virginia; great-granddaughters Samantha, Ashleigh and Savannah; brothers Lloyd and Robert both of Balsam; sister Ann Ruff of Waynesville; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27, at Balsam Baptist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Johnny Swanger will officiate and burial will follow in the church cemetery.
