Mudslides, minor flooding reported in Haywood

The driving range near Lake Junaluska was completely submerged Tuesday evening.

Haywood County remains under a flood watch until Wednesday morning following heavy rainfall since Monday.

Officials report a mudslide took out Long Branch Road off of Black Camp Gap Road near Maggie Valley. At least two other landslides were reported, another on Black Camp Gap Road and one off Highway 209.

Both were minor and NCDOT quickly cleaned up the debris, said Haywood County Emergency Management Director Greg Shuping.

Mountaineer Facebook followers have reported flooding in near Plott Creek, Hyatt Creek, Ivy Hills and West Cove in Canton.

Many mentioned the water levels in Jonathan Creek are higher the highest they've seen in several years.

The bridge under the dam at Lake Junaluska was among the first areas to flood early Tuesday morning and Country Road remains closed. The driving range across from the Haywood County Fairgrounds is completely submerged.

More than anything, Shuping said drivers should avoid driving through flooded areas.

"That is the No. 1 killer during emergency flooding...People think they can drive through moving water," he said.
