Recently the Maggie Valley Community Garden group had the good fortune to be offered a row of beans for the use of the needy in the area.  Seven willing workers headed off to Mike and Jane Mehaffey’s farm in Fines Creek to do a little bean picking, though there was nothing “little” about it — One row had generously grown into two rows about 200 yards long.

Volunteers June and Eugene Johnson, Larry Hepler, Mary Harden, Janette Miller, Bill Chamberlain and Betty Beasley were grateful for blue skies and the view of the mountains. Beasley, the newest member of the group, recently moved to Haywood County from Florida and has already been put to work. She will be helping with deadheading and various other projects.

The group took all the beans they could manage for one day and they look forward to making various tasty bean dishes for the county’s community kitchens and for those who are unable to leave their homes.

The Mahaffeys have invited the group back to pick more beans.
