Kolt Nelson is enjoying a very rare hitting streak in the first three games of the North Carolina District 5 West Tournament at Dutch Fisher Field.
Nelson, who is the talented shortstop for the Waynesville-based Mountaineer Little League 7-year-old all-star baseball team (2-1), went 4-for-4, including hitting for the cycle, to lead his all-star teammates to a 21-9 thumping of Franklin (1-2) in the first round of the bracket play.
The perfect day at the plate for Nelson also continued his perfection in the tournament as the slugger has hit safely 11 consecutive times in MLL 7’s three games.
The winner of Tuesday night’s game between MLL and Jackson County punches its ticket as the West Tournament’s No. 1 seed in the District 5 Tournament in Hendersonville, which begins July 11. The loser will play Franklin tonight at Dutch Fisher for the right to play on and for the West’s final spot in the D5 Tournament as the No. 2 seed. At press time, no results were available from the MLL-Jackson County game.
For the Mountaineer Little League 7-year-old all-stars, which finished with 26 hits, Drew Webb, Mason Rathbone, Bridger Jones. Tyler Petty, Griffin Wilson, Evan Conner, Samuel Hyatt, Christopher Wells, Parker Ray, Tanner Boger and Caden Cook had two hits each in the win.
