Chelsea Batten joins Good Samaritan Clinic.

The Good Samaritan Clinic of Haywood County has announced the addition of a new provider, Chelsea Batten, PA-C. Batten will join the clinic in July and will be supervised by clinic director, Dr. Jonathan White.

Chelsea is originally from Florida where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology. She is a recent graduate from Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia, earning a master's degree in physician assistant studies.

In addition to her clinic rotation experiences, Batten has served in missions and has worked as a CNA in student health service. She has also worked as a client advocate and counselor in a women’s resource center.

Batten's vision for patient care is to “restore people and bring them hope.”  She is looking forward to serving our community.

For the Good Samaritan Clinic the addition of a new provider will increase the number of patient visits by 50 percent. The clinic currently has more than 4,600 active patients.

GSC hopes to eliminate the waiting list of 500 names and increase access in the county to patients with Medicaid. New Medicaid enrollees are now being assigned out of county due to a shortage of providers.

“Access to primary care is a very real problem for our community, whether you have insurance or not,” said Dr. Jonathan White, GSC medical director.  “It is imperative that comprehensive, primary care is an option for underserved patients; otherwise we see more and more costly emergency room visits or worse – patients going without screenings and treatment.”

In May GSC became a designated site with the National Health Service Corps.  The NHSC offers financial and other support to primary care providers and sites in underserved communities. This designation was an integral part of bringing Chelsea to the Good Samaritan Clinic.

An open house to introduce and welcome Batten to the community is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 2014. The public is welcome to drop in from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Good Samaritan Clinic, 34 Sims Circle, Waynesville.
