Jan. 1

A special storytime for babies and toddlers ages 5 months to 2 years old is held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays at the Canton Library, 11 Pennsylvania Avenue. Parents/caregivers and their young ones will work on building communication and early literacy skills, while having fun with rhymes, songs, stories, finger plays, and much more in this storytime designed for the youngest library users. The Canton Branch Library will be offering homework help on a first-come, first-served basis to students in grades 2-6 at noon Wednesdays. Former schoolteacher turned Youth Services Librarian Katy Punch will assist students with their homework on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3-5 p.m. in the children's room at the library. Jan. 6

Students at Haywood County Schools return to classes.

Jan. 9

Kids in third to eighth grades are invited to come build structures out of candy canes at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at the Canton Library. Bring leftover holiday candy, and have some sticky, sweet fun. Candy canes will also be provided. For more information, call 648-2924.

 

Jan. 10

“Despicable Me 2” will be playing at 7:45 p.m. Jan. 10 and at 5 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. Jan. 11 at The Strand at 38 Main, Waynesville.

Jan. 11

Pisgah High School will present “Bach to Broadway Musical” from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 11 and 12 and at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 in the school auditorium.

Jan. 19

Classical pianist Michael Lazenby will perform from 3 to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 free of charge in the Waynesville Public Library meeting room. Call Betina Morgan at 550-6190.

Haywood County Arts Council presents Jim Sorrells Band at 3 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Canton Public Library meeting room free of charge. Sorrells plays the slide guitar with an ensemble. Call 550-6190.

 

Jan. 20

Haywood County Schools Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. No classes.

 

Jan. 31

Teens are invited to munch on popcorn and watch a movie on the big screen at 4 p.m. Jan. 31 in the auditorium of the Canton Branch Library. Due to license restrictions, we aren't allowed to divulge the title of the movie, but call 648-2924 for details. We can say the film is rated PG-13, and based on a bestselling young adult novel.
