Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather
CANTON — Hilliard Sherrill “Nook” Cook, 89, of the Dutch Cove community, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his family.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was a son of the late Roy Carroll and Nova Ardell Clontz Cook. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Ray Cook. Affectionately known as “Nook,” he retired from American Enka in 1984 with 42 years of service. He was an active and supportive member of Morning Star United Methodist Church where he took care of many behind-the-scene details to help the church run smoothly and rang the bell at the appropriate hour. He was known for his attention to the smallest detail and enjoyed collecting facts and information on just about anything and kept daily records of the weather and weekly church attendance. Nook enjoyed hunting for “mayfries” and picking huckleberries on Shining Rock. He enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid gardener and fly fisherman and will be remembered for giving out his favorite chocolate candy to all his friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Joe Clark Cook; two daughters, Marie Cook Irving, of Charlotte, and Kathy Cook Clinard, and her husband, Weldon, of Canton; one sister, Eva Lou Breece, of Canton; one brother, Bill Cook, and his wife, Frances, of Canton; and three grandchildren, Graham Weldon Clinard, of Atlanta, Georgia, Kate Irving and Lisa Sherrill Irving, both of Charlotte.
