    We were in search of a new place to hike and had been directed toward the town of Balsam, which rests in a mountain pass between the Plott Balsams and Great Balsam Mountains. Cold Mountain is part of the great Balsam Mountains and provided the setting for Charles Frazier’s famous novel.
