We were in search of a new place to hike and had been directed toward the town of Balsam, which rests in a mountain pass between the Plott Balsams and Great Balsam Mountains. Cold Mountain is part of the Great Balsam Mountains and provided the setting for Charles Frazier’s famous novel. As we drove into Balsam, we remembered that Balsam is a great place for studying lost history and that our column on the lost mineral springs in Balsam published in "The Mountaineer” is now a reference in “Wikipedia.”
