Notes on Quotes: Hiking and Elvis Presley

When we think of hiking, we usually think of remote rural areas but increasingly hiking routes are being established near homes or through interesting urban areas. Urban hiking recently earned coverage in “National Geographic.” Luckily, Waynesville is very advanced with the Waynesville Greenway winding past residential and business communities.

On a recent trip to Memphis, we sampled urban hiking in earnest.  We had decided to write about Elvis Presley in our column, and after Graceland headed for Beale Street.  Beale Street runs from the Mississippi River to East Street and is a walk of almost two miles. Beale was cooking with outdoor blues bands and street dancing, which was somehow both smooth and funky. ...
