OMC to offer donation-based camp
Outdoor Mission Camp (OMC), an affiliate of Youth For Christ USA, is offering a Wilderness 101 wilderness camp for local students grades 6-12 on a donation basis.
Though every organization and experience has costs associated with it, the weeklong Wilderness 101 will be available on a donation basis July 7-12 and July 21-26. Wilderness 101 is an introduction to wilderness that includes team building on the challenge course, backpacking in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and white water rafting.
Camp Expedition, a two-week camp from June 22 to July 3, is for those who love the wilderness. There is a week of backpacking followed by a week of rock climbing and paddling. Students also learn skill building and discipleship.
OMC also has a 10-week wilderness discipleship course for college-age students. Called "SHERPAs" — because they selflessly lead, guide and serve others — the students are trained in wilderness first aid, swift water rescue, as raft guides on the Nantahalla River, and top rope belayers, as well as counseling skills, evangelism and leadership. A critical part of their training is to put these new skills into practice with young people that come to camp.
