Parade-goers asked to help restock food pantry shelves

The upcoming Christmas parades are not only a time to get in the holiday mood, but to donate canned or boxed food items to help restock the Haywood Christian Ministry food pantry.

At each of the upcoming Christmas parades, The Haywood County Rescue Squad will be holding its annual “Parade for Food.”

The annual parade for food was started last year when it was brought to the Rescue Squad’s attention that the food pantries were bare approaching the holidays.

“We see a lot of people during the local Christmas parades, so what better way to gather non-perishable food items than when we are walking right past,” said Rescue Squad Board Chairman David Stamey. “The spectators don’t have to bring boxes of food, but if every person will put one can of soup or beans in their coat pocket, we would fill the pantries and help feed those in need.”

Christmas parades are set for Thursday,  Dec. 5 in Canton, followed by the Maggie Valley Parade on Saturday, Dec 7 and concluding with the Waynesville Parade on Monday, Dec 9.
