Feb 26, 2014

MedWest Haywood invites parents of Haywood County athletes to a coffee and dessert reception from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.Wednesday, March 5, at the MedWest Haywood Health & Fitness Center. The reception is a chance for parents to meet Dr. Benjamin Debelak who will be joining the MedWest Haywood Sports Medicine team and the practice of Western Carolina Orthopaedic Specialists in April.

Debelak is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. He received his medical degree from the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Michigan State University, Ingham Regional Medical Center/Sparrow Health System. He completed a fellowship in orthopaedic sports medicine at the Hughston Clinic in Columbus, Georgia.

Debelak has provided sports medicine coverage for several high schools throughout Michigan and Georgia, and for college athletes at Central Michigan University, Michigan State University, Columbus State University and Valdosta State University. Additionally, he provided coverage for the Columbus Cottonmouths, a professional hockey team.

For 10 years, the MedWest Haywood Sports Medicine team has been providing free athletic trainers and physician coverage to all sports at the middle and high school levels. They provide injury prevention training and clinical education to coaches. And in the spring, they hold free sports physicals at their Health & Fitness Center, to get young people ready for the upcoming school year.

MedWest Haywood has events planned throughout the month of May to engage young athletes at the Health & Fitness Center, culminating in the annual free sports physicals, which will be held Thursday, May 29. Information about these new events, as well as the free sports physicals, will be released soon.

Parents are asked to R.S.V.P. to the March 5 coffee and dessert reception by calling Katherine Crocker at 452-8883 or emailing
