Persistent Rangers win first tourney this season

Waynesville-based 10-and-under baseball team captures Taco Bell Mountain Frenzy Silver Division championship

CANTON — The Waynesville-based Blue Ridge Rangers 10-and-under Baseball Club persistence paid off as it claimed it first tourney championship of the season.
The Rangers won the Silver Division AA Champions of the Taco Bell Mountain Frenzy Tournamenton at the Canton International Sports Complex on Sunday, May 18.
In the “Silver” championship game, the Rangers rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Asheville-based Carolina Wrath, 8-7.
In the amazing comeback, Hunter Russell, Joshua Heatherly, Mason Stepp, Aidan Campbell, Pierson Owen and Michael Holcombe ripped singles, while Dylan Davidson and Clayton Burgess (game-winning) lined a double each.
On the mound, the Rangers relied on a quartet of pitchers (Taylor Boger, Davidson, Hayden Driver, Russell) to win the Silver Division title.
The Rangers field a team with players from Haywood, Jackson and Buncombe counties.  
At the Taco Frenzy, the Rangers went 3-1 and outscored their opponents 31-22.
The club opened with a 11-7 win over the Asheville Tourists, suffered its only loss, 7-1, to  Sylva-based Raleigh Baseball Institute and thumped the Tourists, 11-3, in the semifinals.
