Throughout May, the Animal Hospital of Waynesville hosted a pet food drive for Haywood County Meals on Wheels.

The staff of the Animal Hospital successfully collected more than 530 pounds of pet food for Meals on Wheels. The food donated will provide the program with the resources necessary to give pet food to owners in need.

“We are so grateful to the Animal Hospital of Waynesville pet food drive and all those who donated to help provide our recipients’ four-legged family members with much needed pet food,” said Meals on Wheels Executive Director Jeanne Naber.

The Meals on Wheels program provides a daily lunchtime meal five days per week to over 200 recipients throughout Haywood County. While the program’s primary focus is to feed people, the demand for pet food has increased.  Many of the participants were feeding some of their own food to their pet, which has a negative impact on the overall health and wellbeing of the pet and participants.

“At times, [our participants] cannot provide food for their pets, and a pet food drive is a way that our community can help,” Naber said.
