Phyllis W. Nerney, 91, of Atlanta, Georgia died peacefully June 26, 2013.
Phyllis was born Sept. 30, 1921 in Mankowa, Poland and arrived in the United States in 1923. She met and married her husband, Francis Xavier Nerney, in Joliet, Illinois in 1941 and moved with her family to Atlanta in 1949. He preceded her in death in 1987 as did a daughter, Margaret Nerney Stein, in 2006.
A loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, her great joy and pride was her family and her faith. A founding member of Our Lady of the Assumption parish, she was active with the Altar Society and with Assumption school from which all six of her children graduated. Her friends and acquaintances were always struck by her selfless devotion, her concern for others and her unfailing generosity. Her remarkable native intelligence and gentle good humor combined to make her a wonderful companion to all, whether family, friend or total stranger. Her presence illuminated the world and she will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Nerney Lyons, Jane Nerney Burns, Patricia Nerney Lewit; and sons Dr. John J. Nerney and Thomas P. Nerney. Her grandchildren are Sarah, Andrew, Elizabeth and Joseph Nerney; Mary and James Lyons; Rachel Lewit Galotti and Joseph Lewit; and Katie Burns Wassink. Her great grandchildren are Juliette and Lucia Galotti and Jillian Lyons.
Her funeral services will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Church Monday, July 1. The visitation and rosary will be held at 10 a.m., Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. and a reception at the parish hall, followed by interment at Arlington Cemetery at will be at 2 p.m.
