Pisgah to hold 5K fundraiser Nov. 17Pisgah Pavement Pounder 5K will raise money for needy students
Pisgah High School students and teachers hosting the school's first 5K race aim to keep the community healthy and raise money for needy students.
The first annual Pisgah Pavement Pounder 5K was the brainchild of Pisgah High School teachers Jennifer McCall and Tammy Ensley, who decided to bring together their love of running and passion for students.
McCall decided to have the sophomore class leaders take on the project.
"I've participated in running races for the past several years and
find it a very fulfilling experience," McCall said. "I thought organizing a 5k for the Pisgah community would be an exciting way to get students, staff,
community, and the public-at-large involved in helping PHS students."
Proceeds from the 5K will be used to help needy Pisgah students to purchase food, clothing, school supplies and other daily needs.
"There are so many students that need help. It is not always obvious who needs help and since we are incorporating the assistance of our school social worker (Carol Sorrells), she can confidentially identify the students with the most extreme need. We aim to help as many students as we possibly can," McCall said.
That's why she hopes avid runners and even those who wish to walk will participate in the fundraiser.
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The 3.1 mile course will start in the Pisgah High School parking lot and continue onto N.C. Highway 215, past the Pisgah baseball field. Then it will loop back to the Canton Recreation Park and lead back to the school.
There will be a water station near the 1.5 mile mark and water and snacks following the finish.
Registration from now through Wednesday, Nov. 14 will be $20. Registration after Nov. 14. until race day will be $25. Packets are available at the school and can also be picked up the day of the race at 7 a.m.
Each participant will receive a Pisgah Pavement Pounder 5k t-shirt, until
the supply is exhausted.
