Playground installation at Beaverdam Community Center to be May 11
Members of the New Morgan Hill Baptist Church, along with Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office deputies and other community members, will install two playgrounds and begin construction on a baseball diamond at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 11,at the Beaverdam Community Center, 1620 N. Canton Road, in Canton. This community collaboration evolved as a result of the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office COPS Team initiative in the Beaverdam Community that created an effective strategic partnership with New Morgan Hill Baptist Church, resulting in a pizza and homework program that operates twice a week, a grant to create an organic community garden, and this playground installation.
COPS stands for Community Oriented Problem-Solving Team. The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office utilizes this problem-solving based approach to address issues in specific communities. Each COPS Team works in a particular community for 30 days, identifying key issues, speaking with community leaders and residents in the community, creating an action plan, and then presenting their findings and suggestions to Sheriff’s Office Command Staff and to the community at the end of the 30 day period.
“This is a great example of how the Sheriff’s Office can partner with the community and bring other partners to the table to create sustainable solutions to some of their problems,” Sheriff Duncan stated. “The New Morgan Hill Baptist Church is an excellent example of how the faith-based community can assist neighborhoods in improving their quality of life as well as helping provide safe and positive activities for children in that community.”
