The Haywood Waterways Association and Lake Junaluska Assembly are hosting the second annual Polar Plunge from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Lake Junaluska beach. The event benefit for Kids in the Creek program and youth education and features a “plunge” into Lake Junaluska, followed by a bonfire and hot chili lunch. Costumes are encouraged. Prizes will be awarded to top fundraisers and best costumes.

The cost is $25, with all proceeds benefiting Haywood Waterway's Kids in the Creek and youth education programs. All plungers receive a free T-shirt and everyone, plungers and spectators, get a free lunch.   Kids in the Creek is Haywood Waterways' premier education event. It is a hands-on learning experience about water, and includes opportunities for students to get in the river, flip over rocks and learn about the many creatures living in the Pigeon River.

In the event’s 16 year history, Haywood Waterways has reached nearly 11,000 eighth grade students. It is consistently one of the more memorable experiences students have from their final year of middle school, and is an important tool for teachers.

“Kids in the Creek does more to increase students understanding of water and water quality than anything I could do in the classroom," one teacher said. "It has been a valuable learning tool for many years and something the students and I look forward to every year.”
