The Haywood County multi-agency drug task force recently arrested three men in association with the theft of prescription pain medication from an elderly woman.

Officers with the Unified Narcotics Investigative Team (UNIT) received information last week that liquid morphine being prescribed for a patient receiving end-of-life care was being stolen from her home on Walnut Trail. The task force also received information that known drug users and dealers had been frequenting and staying at that location.

The task force conducted a welfare check on the elderly female at the residence, and during the course of the investigation, seized several items of drug paraphernalia and five guns.

The men arrested April 22 included James Randall "Randy" Barnett, 31, and Phillip Szostak, 23, both of Ragwood Lane, Waynesville, and Andrew Justin "A.J." Clubb, 25, of Dovetail Lane, Waynesville.

Barnett was charged with felony exploitation of an elderly or disabled adult and larceny and possession of stolen property. Szostak was charged with five counts of possession of firearm by felon and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. Clubb was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.
