Area IV American Legion Baseball Commissioner Rocky Bennett awarded Haywood Post 47 one of four junior legion regional sites on Wednesday.
In addition, the Doughboys, which are 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the Area IV West Division, have been named the Junior Legion West Regional’s No. 1 seed.
Manager Eryk McConnell’s ballclub played at doubleheader at Rutherford County Post 423 last night. At press time, no results were available. The Doughboys host Cherryville Post 100 in a Area IV West Division doubleheader tonight at 5 p.m. at the friendly confines of Tuscola Ballpark.
“This is huge for us,” said McConnell. “Especially for a first year junior legion franchise. Our kids are excited about the opportunity to host and to begin advancing toward the state tournament. We do not know the other three teams who will be in our regional. But I am sure there will be a lot of baseball fans converging on the town of Waynesville and Tuscola Ballpark beginning July 5.
Haywood Post 47 will host the double-elimination Area IV Junior Legion West Regional, which begins Saturday, July 5, at Tuscola Ballpark. Game 1 of the West Regional is set for 5 p.m. and Haywood Post 47 will play against an opponent to be determined at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 5. Sunday’s elimination game will begin at 5 p.m. with the two previous day’s winners  scheduled to tangle at 7:30 p.m. from Tuscola Ballpark.
