Post 47's Rector announces ‘Baseball Bash’Fundraiser to benefit the Haywood Post 47 Baseball Clubs will include bands, cornhole tournament, 50/50 raffle, games, drinks, food and two pro players
Commander Ken Rector announced on Wednesday his organization is sponsoring a big fundraiser for the Haywood Post 47 Baseball Clubs on Saturday, Sept. 13.
The fundraiser, called the “Baseball Bash,” will be at Haywood Post 47 on Legion Drive, behind Bogart’s Restaurant in Waynesville, starting at noon.
The Baseball Bash will feature live music provided by three bands, a cornhole tournament, several games for kids, food and drinks (adult beverages inside Post 47) provided by Blue Ridge Bar-B-Q Place, a 50/50 split raffle and two local professional baseball players, Tyler Brosius and Cody Stubbs, who are planning to attend the event to sign autographs and take pictures with the kids.
“Since becoming the commander at Post 47 in early June, I told the players and folks running our baseball clubs to ensure they will continue on for many more years, Post 47 will back them in every way possible,” said Rector. “If it means volunteers to help, we will be there. But it also means sponsoring a fundraising event, we will do it. But without question, from this day forward, Post 47 will provide financial support to the Post 47 baseball teams. No longer are we going to have the sole responsibility for financial support fall on the shoulders of our community and local businesses. If they want to help back the baseball clubs, then that’s great. But it is Post 47’s responsibility to be the major financial supporter of our baseball clubs, period.
“With what is planned for the Baseball Bash, I truly believe this event will have a tremendous turnout from the community and the members of Post 47. All the proceeds will go to the Haywood Post 47 Baseball Clubs and every kid who plays for us will benefit greatly. And that is what it is all about, the kids.”
There will be a bluegrass band playing at the Baseball Bash in addition to the Lowdown from Asheville and the Mindframe. All three bands are donating their time for the baseball benefit.
The Lowdown is one of the hottest rhythm and blues bands, while Mindframe is currently celebrating 30 years with its original lineup and in one of Western North Carolina’s best rock and roll bands.
“All the people coming to listen to the bands will be pleasantly surprised at how fantastic the teenagers perform in Lowdown,” said John Truitt, a member of the Haywood Post 47 Baseball Clubs Advisory Board.
The cost of a ticket for this fundraiser is $20. Prices for food, drinks and fee to play in the cornhole tournament have yet to be determined at press time.
“I am asking for the community to join all the members of Haywood Post 47 in supporting our players and the coaches in their efforts to play America’s national pastime,” said Rector.
Two years ago, Haywood Post 47’s first baseball team in 61 years was the senior legion (19-and-under) Dragoons. The club manager is Caleb McConnell. and he was assisted by Scotty Schulhofer.
Then this summer, Haywood Post 47 fielded its first junior legion team (17-and-under) ever — the Doughboys. The squad’s manager is Eryk McConnell and he is assisted by Michael Munoz.
Haywood Post 47 continues to grow and has announced that the “Special Forces” will be ready for the 2015 season.
The Haywood Post 47 Special Forces, will be a 13 to 15-year-old junior legion team and will play a full schedule next summer.
