Power equipment theft up in Waynesville

Waynesville detectives are investigating a recent rash of power equipment thefts.

Det. Bryan Reeves said the trending crime began Aug. 5, when a weed eater was stolen from a carport at a home near North Main Street. About a month later on Sept. 7, a man reported that someone stole his weed eater out of his truck while he was doing landscape work at a church on Hendrix Street.

A week later, three chainsaws were stolen from Doyle's Wrecker Service and on Sept. 16 a leaf blower and weed eater were stolen from a man who was doing landscape work at Vantage Point apartments.

Reeves and Det. Sam Holland believe the recent three thefts were the same suspect.

Reeves said people, especially residents in West Waynesville, should be aware that power equipment theft is currently on the rise and to keep such items locked up.
