Pretty 4 Prom is accepting donations

PRETTY 4 PROM — WOW is seeking donations of gently used and clean ball gowns, party dresses, accessories, shoes and etc. to help young women in Haywood County go to prom.

The high school prom dance is a rite of passage for many teens but it can be an expensive undertaking. Pretty 4 Prom is there to help teens and parents struggling with expenses and to allow them to share in the prom magic.

Pretty 4 Prom is a campaign to collect prom dresses and accessories for local girls. Organizers are seeking donations of gently used and clean ball gowns, party dresses, accessories, shoes and etc. Pretty 4 Prom is also accepting cash donations for dry cleaning of donated dresses.

This concept was the idea of Joy Johnson, a veteran member of WOW who has undertaken many fundraising events for local charities and nonprofits. Johnson wanted to reach out and directly impact the youth and young girls in the community.

“Many of our young ladies dream of going to their high school prom, and because of situations they have no control over, there may not be money for a gown and accessories,” said Johnson. “Or … if their attire is not up to par, it’s enough pressure on their conscience and inner being to simply not attend.”

The idea was presented to WOW in late February.

“We are so pleased and excited to see one of our own WOW ladies step outside of another box and create something beautiful, empowering and, most of all, inspiring for our lady youth in the community,” said Nikki White, president of WOW.

With the rapid launch of Pretty for Prom, the experience has already proven to be a huge success. The campaign has already received 17 gowns, ranging from size 2 to size 20. The goal is to have close to 100 gowns donated by the deadline.

The deadline for all donations is April 30.All gowns, accessories, shoes and clutches can be dropped off at Angie Franklin’s office, State Farm Insurance, located at 1908 S. Main St. in Waynesville.

This project is being co-sponsored by Angie Franklin, State Farm and WOW. For more information, call Joy Johnson at 550-9511 or Starr T. at 476-4231.
