Public can weigh in on hospital sale, human service consolidation
At Monday’s 5:30 p.m. board meeting, the Haywood County commissioners will hold three public hearings — one on a resolution of intent to sell the hospital property, another on changes to the road naming ordinance, and a third on integrating the health and human services departments.
Citizens wishing to speak are asked to sign up prior to 5:20 p.m.
The county must weigh in on the proposed sale of Haywood Regional Medical Center, also known as MedWest-Haywood, because it retained reverter rights when the county hospital became a hospital authority.
There is a legal process the county must follow to relinquish its claim to the property that includes two public hearings.
The DSS/health department integration is an issue that has been discussed for more than a year. A task force issued a report that outlined 16 steps to be taken before such a merger could be accomplished.
Should the commissioners decide to move forward with the plan, a preliminary time frame shows a single department could be in place at the start of the 2014-15 fiscal year, which begins in July 2014.
