CANTON — Rachel Stamey Thomason, 92, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Maggie Valley Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center.
A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Mack and Ella Franklin Stamey. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Carroll Thomason, who died 1988; two sons, Richard and James Thomason; and 12 brothers and sisters. She was a member of Welcome Hill Baptist Church. Rachel was special and loved by everyone who knew her. She always placed others before herself, especially her family whom she loved dearly. Rachel enjoyed cooking, shopping at yard sales with her daughter and caring for her special doll, Kimmy.
She is survived by a daughter, Jo Ann Jones, of Canton; three sons, Lewis Thomason, of Canton, Roger Thomason and wife, Rita, of Casaer, North Carolina, and Jerry Thomason, of Canton; 14 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 11, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Jennings officiating. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery on Newfound Road. The family will receive friends from 5 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
