Raleigh delivers walk-off winDragoons’ slugger rips game-winning RBI-triple in bottom of 10th to beat Camden (S.C.), 7-6
Tied at six in the bottom of the 10th inning, Cal Raleigh (Smoky Mountain), ripped a two-out triple into the right field corner, driving in Trey Maslin (Franklin), to give Haywood Post 47 a 7-6 win over Camden (S.C.) Post 17.
Manager Caleb McConnell’s Dragoons avoided the non-league series sweep and improved to 1-2 overall. Post 47 will open the Area IV West Division at Hickory Post 48 tonight.
Relief left-handed pitcher Mark Thompson (Smoky Mountain) earned the win, hurling a spotless final 3.1 innings. he gave up one single, struck out four and walked four.
The Dragoons had a chance to get a walk-off win in the bottom of the ninth when Thomas Tatham (Pisgah) led off the frame with a double off the right-center wall. But he was stranded at third.
Post 47 scored a run in the second, two runs in the third, one more in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 6-2 lead.
Holt Underwood (Pisgah) started and went 4.2 innings. allowing two hits, a pair of earned runs, striking out three but walking six batters.
Lefty Chance Roberts (Hiwassee Dam), who had not thrown all spring because of a bad ankle injury, relieved Underwood and got the Dragoons out of a jam.
But he struggled in the sixth, allowing a run, and was charged with three runs in the seventh before Thompson relieved him.
For the Dragoons had eight hits. Maslin had three hits, while Raleigh and Tatham had two hits each. Camden Post 17 finished with six hits.
The next home game for the Dragoons is Sunday, June 1 against Caldwell County. The start time has been pushed back from 7 p.m. to 4 p.m. due to final exams.
