Ralph A. Dickson Jr.
GASTONIA — Mr. Ralph A. Dickson Jr., 85, of Gastonia, died Saturday Aug. 23, 2014, at Caromont Regional Medical Center, Gastonia. A native of Gastonia, he was the son of the late Ralph Alexander Dickson and Bess Sullins Dickson. In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his loving wife of 55 years, Louise Willis Dickson.
Ralph was the president of Genuine Parts, Inc., a Gastonia-based company founded by his father in the 1930’s, joining him in the 1940’s. He was the co-owner and officer of Shiflet and Dickson, Inc., Millenium Automotive and Haywood Equity Group.
He was past president of the N.C. Automotive Wholesalers Association, and the Virginias/Carolinas Automotive Wholesalers Association. He served as a director for both First Union Bank and Wachovia Bank. Ralph was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia, where through his many years of attendance was a Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder and member of the Men’s Henderlite Bible Class.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph A. Dickson III and Ann W. Dickson, of Gastonia; a daughter, Jan Dickson Mercer, of Indian Land, South Carolina; a sister, Myra Dickson Myers, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Wesley A. Mercer, of Indian Land, Ralph A. Dickson IV, Andrew C. Dickson and Taylor B. Dickson, all of Gastonia; and a special caregiver, Mary Frances Hunter, of Lake Norman.
The Revs. Lauren Sease Vanacore and John H. Stanley will conduct a funeral at 2 p.m. Wednesday Aug. 27, at the First Presbyterian Church of Gastonia The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia and also immediately following the funeral service in the church parlor. Interment will be private.
