Raquel's Creative Cakes bake up some joy

Raquel’s Creative Cakes offers custom cakes and specialty desserts for all occasions.   Originally from New York City, Raquel Moore and her family moved to Bryson City in 2003. She works from her home kitchen, which has been inspected by the N.C. Department of Agriculture.

Moore enjoys meeting brides, grooms and their families in her home which is decorated with display cakes and wedding decorations and are available for rent.  Consultations and tastings take about an hour and Moore usually sketches a design inspired by the bride and groom’s vision. She enjoys the design process and invites input from the bride and groom.

"I am in the business of making events special  because I enjoy creating edible art and being a part of a couple's special day," said Moore.

Moore took her first paid cake order in May 1996 for a 25th wedding anniversary. Previously, she had only done "gift" cakes for family and friends.

Since that time, she has seen changes in trends in cake industry.

"Butter cream isn't really the norm anymore due to fondant having taken over in cake designing," said Moore. "I feel this is not a change for the better because butter cream designs require more delicate skill and training."

Moore's advice to new business owners is to have a large support network.

"Make sure you have a support network of family, friends and colleagues before you start," said Moore. "I think emotional support is one of the most important things in starting any business."

"My husband, Jack, is my greatest supporter and very honest with constructive criticism," said Moore. "I appreciate his gentle way of telling me when a cake I'm decorating is not 100 percent perfect. And my son, Charles, is the reason I started decorating cakes. I'm looking forward to making his wedding cake. My friend, Billie Jones, recently became my partner in the business. She is a former cake decorating student of mine. She is naturally talented with gum paste figurines and is game to try anything I throw at her."

Meet Moore at the Blue Ridge Bridal Show on April 5 to learn more about her custom creations and how she can make any event a special occasion. For more information, visit www.raquelscreativecakes.com or call 508-0177.
