Loving Husband, Father, Grandfather

CANTON — Denver Ray Holder Sr., 85, of North Main Street, passed away Wednesday, April 16, 2014.

Mr. Holder was born Aug. 22, 1928, in Haywood County to the late Abb Roland Holder and Ethel Tiller Holder. He had made his home in Haywood County all of his life and honorably served as a U.S. Air Force veteran. Mr. Holder retired from Champion International with 42 years of dedicated service and was a Champion Old Timer. Ray was indeed a talented carpenter and brick mason and his talents could be seen in the beautiful Holder home that he remodeled himself. Friends and family were always made to feel welcome at the Holder home. Whether it was a special holiday or just a friendly invitation to share time together, Ray and Mary have touched so many people with their kindness that will never be forgotten. Ray was also a true perfectionist on keeping his lawn perfectly manicured and mowed and his yard was always admired by neighbors and friends passing by. Blessed with many friendships that he treasured dearly, Ray was a member of the "Breakfast Club Gang" that meets each morning at Hardees, McDonalds or Burger King. Ray often laughingly said, "I rotate each morning to where I might be needed the most." Ray will always be remembered and cherished as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Eula Devlin and Mary Wilson; and his brothers, Henry, L.B., Troy, Ralph, Bud and Gerald Holder.

Surviving are his loving wife of 62 years, Mary Carver Holder; his son, Denver Holder, of Canton; his grandson, Zachary Holder, of  Missoula, Montana; sisters, Thelma Sams, of Alabama, and Polly Reno, and her husband, Dan, of Clyde; and many nieces and nephews that Ray loved deeply.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 19, in the chapel of Crawford/Ray Funeral Home. The Revs. Kenneth Rhinehart and Jimmy Smathers will be officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Entombment will be in The Horizon at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Holder’s memory to N.C. Search and Rescue Dog Association, Inc., PO Box 956, Clyde, NC 28721.

Crawford/Ray Funeral Home is honored to be caring for the Holder family and words of comfort may be shared at www.crawford.com.
