Education didn’t fare well under GOP

To the editor:

The old saying is that a half-truth is a whole lie.  That is the case with Senator Davis claiming that the Republican lead assembly supported education by paying for 2,000 teacher salaries out of state funds.

What he does not say is that was only a partial replacement for the 6,000 positions lost when federal education funding ended.  In Haywood County alone, we lost more than 100 positions – many of them teachers and teacher aids.

If balancing the budget was so important, why did Senator Davis and the other Republicans give a huge tax cut to businesses that totaled almost as much as the direct cuts to education?

Senator Davis voted to forgive every corporation in the state the state income tax on their first $50,000 of income.  That was ...
