Region A Partnership for Children receives funding
The Evergreen Foundation recently awarded $12,500 to the Region A Partnership for Children to expand the Region A Family Support Network (FSN) program for families with children with special needs in the seven western most counties of North Carolina. The Evergreen Foundation funding will help the FSN program reach more families during the 2014-15 fiscal year and expand the support groups for families to all seven counties.
The FSN of Region A matches caregivers of children with special needs or health concerns with other families with similar concerns to build peer support among caregivers. An FSN coordinator facilitates support groups; educational groups; and provides information and referral for families to assist them in providing care and in accessing services for their children with special needs. The Coordinator assists parents in becoming stronger and more educated advocates for their children. The program serves families in Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Jackson, Macon and Swain counties and in Cherokee.
The FSN of Region A has operated for 10 years with over 1,600 families with children who have special needs receiving support and resource identification and referral. These needs have included: mental health issues, behavioral issues, developmental disabilities, concerns due to physical conditions and medical issues. Through FSN of Region A, parents learn to share their experiences in positive ways as well as to provide the support other parents need.
