Registration open for annual Senior Games

Waynesville — Registration is now open for the 35th Annual Haywood County Senior Games. Sign up at the Haywood County Recreation and Parks Department, 63 Elmwood Way, Suite B, Waynesville, or at the following off-site locations:

— Tuesday, March 21, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Senior Resource Center, 81 Elmwood Way, Waynesville

— Thursday, March 23, noon to 2 p.m. at Canton Town Hall, 58 Park St., Canton

— Tuesday, March 28, 7 to 10 a.m. at Haywood Regional Fitness Center, 75 Leroy George Drive, Clyde

— Thursday, March 30, 7 to 10 a.m. at Waynesville Recreation Center, 550 Vance St., Waynesville

Events are scheduled throughout the county from April 20 to May 11. To participate, seniors must be 50 or better on Dec. 31, 2017, and must live in Haywood County for three consecutive months.

Haywood County Senior Games is one of three original local games that make up the current 53 local games sanctioned by the North Carolina Senior Games. Participants have the opportunity to compete in a variety of athletic events like shuffleboard, pickleball, table tennis, bowling, swimming and track and field events and more.

For those not athletically inclined, the Silver Arts portion includes Visual Arts (photography, painting, woodworking, etc.), Heritage Arts (pottery, quilting, basket weaving, etc.), Literary Arts (poems, short stories, essays, life experiences) and Performing Arts (comedy/drama, vocal, dance, instrumental, line dance).

Registration costs $15 and seniors can participate in as many activities as they want in either division. Bowling and golf have additional fees.

The fee includes a T-shirt, light lunch at the Opening Ceremony on April 20 and AARP Ice Cream Social on May 4.
