Richard Charles 'Ben' Bennett
Waynesville — Richard Charles "Ben" Bennett Jr., U.S. Army (Ret), 80, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2013 after an extended illness.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn Jones Bennett; father, Richard Charles Bennett Sr.; and wife, Marianne Bennett.
Mr. Bennett was born in Atlanta, Georgia Sept. 24, 1933. He graduated from Marist High School in Atlanta. He served 22 years in the U.S. Army, and after achieving the rank of CW3 and serving two tours in Vietnam and three tours in Germany, retired in 1973.
He went to Florida Technological University and Rollins College, earning master's degrees in both criminal justice and psychology. He enjoyed a second career as an instructor and director of the criminal justice department at Haywood Community College. He retired in 1996 after 18 years.
Mr. Bennett was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks, Moose, American Legion, Retired Officers Association, Masonic Lodge, Military Officers Association, American Polygraph Association and the N.C. Sheriff’s Association (honorary member).
Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife, Carole Bennett; daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Keith Walton; son, Christopher Bennett; granddaughter, Rosemary Bennett; and sister and brother-in-law, Valerie and Perry Schwartz.
