World War II Veteran

WAYNESVILLE  — Robert Boone Garrett, 92, of Waynesville, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012.  He was born in Haywood County Feb. 28, 1920, to the late James Blaine and Leacil McElroy Garrett. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Second Armored Division, Hell on Wheels, participating in the North African Campaign and the Invasions of Sicily and Normandy.   He was a retired building contractor, having built many homes in Haywood County.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Bonnie Mills Garrett, who passed away in 2011.  He was also preceded in death by two brothers, James and Bill Garrett; four sisters, Lillian York, Eula Dee Jones, Nina Chambers and Flora Reece.

He is survived by two brothers, Wayne Garrett, of Waynesville, and Gene Garrett, of Hendersonville.

He is also survived by two sons, Carl Wendell Garrett Sr., and his wife, Rose, of Sylva, and Gerald Garrett, and his wife, Juanita, of Waynesville; five grandchildren, Wendy Stubblefield (Phil), Carl Garrett Jr., Nathan Garrett (Nancy), Cynthia Knight (Dale), and Bryan Garrett; 10 great-grandchildren, Caroline, Ellen, Philip, and Henry Stubblefield, Nolan and Peyton Garrett, Eli and Evan Garrett and Madelyn and Garrett Boone Knight; and special friends, Emily Holder and Doyle Parker.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will be held at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Legion Post 47 or VFW Post 5202 of Waynesville.
