Robert 'The Cowboy' Hollingworth

WAYNESVILLE — Robert “The Cowboy” Hollingworth, 69, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at the Homestead Hospice.

A native of Shrewsbury, England, he was born May 4, 1944, having traveled on the Queen Mary as a baby to America with his mother, Betty Hollingworth.

Mr. Hollingworth served in the United States Air Force, and retired as a camera man in New Jersey before moving to Waynesville. He was a member of Long’s Chapel.

Robert was very active with the Smoky Mountain Chess Club at Blue Ridge Books, having helped its membership grow and serving as the treasurer and assistant to the “Grand Poobah.” He also loved participating in Ghost Town as a gunfighter in reenactments and was an avid horseshoe player.

Mr. Hollingworth loved the Smoky Mountains, always saying, “I wasn’t born here, but I got here as fast as I could.”

Survivors include his companion of 10 years, Eve Kaye Connestee of the home; step-son, Michael Sirmans of Melbourne, Florida; and three loving step-grandchildren, Sierra, Corey, and Olivia.

In accordance with Mr. Hollingworth’s wishes, there will be no services held.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to PETA or any other reputable organization who puts animals' welfare first.
