Bigfoot is real and it's coming to Waynesville Aug. 23
Now that we’ve firmed up a date, I can finally tell you about a top-secret project I’ve been working on with The Strand theater.
On Aug. 23, The Strand and The Mountaineer will present a Red Carpet Release Party to celebrate the release of ‘Bigfoot Wars,” a major motion picture based on the novel written by Canton author Eric S. Brown. This is a big freaking deal, and we are so proud of his accomplishments that we wanted to throw him a big party.
We’re planning a Hollywood black tie pre-party and will roll out the red carpet for Brown — literally. The party will start at 6 p.m. as we welcome Eric and his family with a toast. We’ll have food and drinks available as Eric introduces himself, the movie and signs copies of his books.
Bigfoot will be on hand for rare photo ops with guests before we head into the theater to view the movie at 7:45 p.m. Origin Releasing is releasing the movie in select theaters so this might be your only chance to see it locally and meet the writer. The Strand only seats about 70 people so you’ll want to purchase your ticket now. Tickets to the pre-party cost $25 and tickets to the movie cost $6. Call The Strand at 283-0079 to purchase your tickets.
We’re hoping to make the pre-party a fundraiser for The Strand as well since owners Lorraine and Rodney Conard are trying to raise funds to install a marque for the theater. This is such a great opportunity to congratulate Eric for this milestone and also support a budding local business.
If you are a regular reader of The Guide, you know Eric. He’s been writing a comic book column for several years now, but that is just a small piece of what Eric does. As I’ve told him a number of times, he’s living the dream. After many years of working a day job at Walmart in Waynesville and writing in his free time, he is now a full-time author at home. He has written more than 40 books in the horror/science fiction genre.
He started out writing zombie novels for Coscom Entertainment, but then he wrote “Bigfoot War.” It’s the story of Jeff Taylor, a boy growing up in a small North Carolina town whose parents are murdered by Sasquatch. While his first instinct is to flee from his past, he eventually returns to seek his revenge.
While Eric says Coscom reluctantly published it in 2010, it’s been a huge success and was just the beginning of the eight-book series. Search “Bigfoot Wars” on YouTube to see the official movie trailer — it’s impressive!
Ever since Eric told me he sold the movie rights last summer, we have been eagerly waiting for this moment and I’ve been secretly plotting this party. I told Eric to get a tux for the party, which I don’t think he’s very excited about since he is typically wearing a Flash T-shirt. But I know he’ll be a good sport.
I’ll be sure to fill you in on future details for the event.
I’m on call this weekend and it will be a busy one for sure. I’ll be snapping some pictures and enjoying myself at Sarge’s Dog Walk in downtown Waynesville, the Frog Hop Festival in Frog Level, Hillbilly Woodstock in Maggie Valley and Mater Fair in Canton. Read more about these events in this week’s Guide and hopefully I’ll see everyone there.
