Well St. Patrick’s Day weekend didn’t turn out exactly like I had planned — but that didn’t stop me from enjoying myself. This time last week I figured I would spend the weekend cooking some traditional Irish foods, attending some of the local St. Paddy’s events and wearing green.

But on Saturday I traded my green garb in for red and black. I’m quite accustomed to red and black, being a Georgia girl and all, but this time it was to support the Pisgah High School girls basketball team at the state championship game in Chapel Hill.

I’d be the first to admit I’m not a sports fan, and I can’t remember the last basketball game I attended, but I too was sucked into the Pisgah pride. It was a blast right up until the last several minutes of the game when the reality set in — we were too far behind to make a comeback.

I was getting into it and found it difficult not to scream along with the fans when we felt like refs made a bad call or when the Bears missed a shot. The loss made the four and a half hour drive back to Haywood much longer, but spirits were still high on the bus. Congratulations again to the Pisgah girls for making it so far and giving us the excitement of a good game.


St. Paddy’s Day review

In between catching up on my writing assignments for The Mountaineer and The Guide on St. Patrick’s Day Sunday, my husband managed to pull me away to have a little fun. I got to wear one of my new green dresses I got on clearance in Asheville on Friday, (there’s nothing I love more than a good deal) and we stopped by Tipping Point Tavern to get a little taste of Irish food and music.

I was satisfied having my favorite Irish beer, Smithwick’s, pronounced Schmitick’s, while Matt tried out Tipping Point’s Bloody Mary. Served with a slice of bacon, cheese-stuffed olives and spring onion, I must admit it was the best Bloody Mary I’ve ever tried. Hopefully they will continue to serve it all year long.

The music provided by fiddler Ian Moore and his band, which included a banjo and standing bass, were very entertaining. I love the beat of Irish music.


Spring is in the air

While today is the first day of spring, last Saturday felt like spring had already sprung as temperatures reached 72 degrees. The warmer weather was much appreciated as I slipped on my flip-flops for the first time Saturday. I look forward to the flowers blooming and the trees on my mountain turning green as all the dead leaves covering the ground slowing disappear.

I have several things on my “First Spring in Haywood County” list of things to do, which include taking my husband and my dog on hiking trips. My dog Ginger thoroughly enjoys a good romp in the streams and waterfalls. If anyone knows of the best camping sites, please let me know because I have a tent I haven’t used yet. Perhaps I’ll include a top 10 list in next week’s Guide.

This weekend also is looking promising for people ready to get out and about in Haywood. On Friday, Harrah’s in Cherokee is holding a re-grand opening to celebrate its $650 million dollar expansion. I may take advantage of my press credentials to check it out, take photos and report back to my readers next week for sure.

Make your reservations for the annual Pisgah Country Show presented by the Pisgah High School chorus students this weekend. The show is at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and a barbecue dinner will be served Saturday at 5:45 p.m. before the show. See a great-choreographed show featuring country hits while also helping the students raise money for their Disney World trip.

On Saturday, the Eckerd Foundation will be sponsoring a children’s extravaganza with music, games and other entertainment from noon-10 p.m. at the Haywood County Fairgrounds. The purpose of the event is to raise money to provide college scholarships to young men and women in substance abuse homes in Haywood County. Stop by for live music, dance teams, cloggers and other fun events for families.
