In Loving Memory

CLYDE — Ronald Allen Phillips, 70, of Clyde, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013, after a fast bout with lung cancer. Mr. Phillips was born Nov. 21, 1942, in Newnan, Georgia, and had been a resident of Clyde since 1956.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hoyt Allen Phillips, who gave his life in World War II;  his mother, Helen Storey; and step-father, Milton Storey.

Mr. Phillips attended Waynesville High School and also Haywood Technical Institute. He began his military career by serving in the U.S.Navy on the USS Boxer LP55 for five  years. He retired from the U.S. Army and the Clyde 211th MP Company of the N.C. National Guard with more than 30 years of dedicated service. He served as past president of the North Carolina Guard Educational Foundation. Mr. Phillips honorably served his country in Vietnam, Desert Storm and the Dominican Republic. He loved America dearly and always demonstrated great pride and true patriotism for his country.

Mr. Phillips was a past Bishop and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Waynesville Ward. He had also served in numerous teaching positions and loved the gospel of Jesus Christ. Mr. Phillips had served as the president of The Arc of Haywood County for 16 years and worked tirelessly to acquire services for the developmentally handicapped. He loved the Atlanta Braves and the North Carolina Tar Heels and he had served as a Little League Coach and a Boy Scout Troop Master.

He is survived by his wife, Rita Mooney Phillips; a son, Rodney Allen Phillips (Tracie); a daughter, Amy Ferguson (James); a sister, Pat Vetter (Gary); a brother, Stanley Storey (Faye); a brother-in-law, Ricky Mooney; a special nephew, Tommy Mooney (Jackie); grandchildren, Trevor and Dessa Phillips, Molly, Madison and Sawyer Ferguson; his special cat, “Cissy;” also many other Phillips family members residing in Newnan, Georgia.

A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, May 10, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 68 Foxwood Dr., off Highway 209, Lake Junaluska. Bishop Stephen Adler will be conducting the memorial service. All friends and relatives are invited to attend.
