Rutherford Expedition program in Balsam

The Balsam Community Center will host Rep. Joe Sam Queen, local historian and director of the Smoky Mountain Folk Festival for more than 30 years, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, for a program on the Rutherford Expedition of 1776.
The program is free and open to the public.
Griffith Rutherford led a military force early in the Revolutionary War as a punitive effort to prevent Cherokee inhabitants from joining the British, taking a route through Western North Carolina, including Balsam Gap.
The Balsam Community Center is located 400 Cabin Flats Road, Balsam. A potluck dinner will precede the program beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information call 456-5474.
