Rux Gardens Helps Haywood Spay/Neuter
On Saturday, June 1, Rux Gardens of Waynesville hosted its third annual Rux Gardens Day for neuter and spay to benefit the programs of local nonprofit Haywood Spay/Neuter. The all-day profit-sharing event was a great success, and Rux Gardens donated an impressive $2,380, half their profits from the day, for spay/neuter. Chandra Spaulding, Haywood Spay/Neuter's Executive Director, says of the event, "We couldn't have been happier with the turn-out and community support. We love that this event has caught on, and we also love this partnership with a local business." She continues, "Spay/Neuter support is needed beyond the family level in Haywood County. When local businesses can find a way to participate, we have an opportunity to make an enormous difference in ensuring that low-cost spay/neuter services are available to anyone's pet. The overpopulation of pets affects all of us." Rux Gardens is known across Haywood Count to be a business with a philanthropic heart, growing not just plants, but a better community.
Haywood Spay/Neuter partners with local veterinarians and Asheville Humane Alliance, the region's premier high-volume, low-cost spay/neuter hospital, to provide over 2,500 spay/neuter procedures a year. Fixing pets eliminates unwanted litters of puppies and kittens from ending up in local animal services, and, in turn, eliminates the euthanasia of pets, turning a community from a kill community to one that is safe-for-life. This valuable service also promotes public health. A couple pregnant cats in a home can quickly become a multi-generational mass of cats and kittens which become unmanageable, particularly since pets can become pregnant at four to five months of age, and the average gestation is just a couple months. The majority of dogs and cats passing through Haywood Spay/Neuter's programs receive state-mandated rabies vaccinations, as well.
To sign up for any of Haywood Spay/Neuter's programs, clients should visit the office at 182 Richland Street at Frog Level in Waynesville, Monday-Thursday, 12-5 pm, and bring a photo i.d. and income verification. Spay/neuter for pit bulls and pit mixes is free. For all others there is a sliding scale starting at just $10. Dogs and cats 8 weeks old to 8 years old are eligible, as long as they weigh at least 2 pounds.
